Cucumber recall after people sickened in 23 states. What you should know in Michigan

A salmonella outbreak tied to cucumbers has affected at least 100 people, the Food and Drug Administration said, including two in Michigan.

One hundred people across 23 states have been infected with salmonella linked to the outbreak, the FDA said in a Monday news release.

Of the 90 people whose information was available, 25 were hospitalized; no deaths have been reported. It is not clear if any of the people hospitalized were from Michigan.

Companies have begun recalls on products, including Arizona company SunFed Produce, which recalled cucumbers sold Oct. 12 through Nov. 26 in more than two dozen states -- including at some Walmart, Wegmans and Albertsons stores -- and in parts of Canada because they may be contaminated with salmonella.

Costco and Kroger also recently notified customers they sold some of the recalled cucumbers.

The FDA says its investigation remains ongoing.

Here is a list of dates and brands that issued recalls:

Products sold in Michigan include Peak Cucumber; Cucumber Super Select; Cucumber; Garden Salad W/ Ranch Dressing; Turkey Havarti Wrap; Bacon Avocado Wrap; Garden Salad; Cucumber Quarter-inch Slice/Skin-on; Cucumber Diced; and Cucumber Quarter-inch Peeled Sliced, and Beef & Lamb Gyro Sandwich Express Meal Kits.

The products may have been sold under the brands Russ Davis, Crazy Fresh, Quick & Easy, Kowalski's Markets and Fresh Creative Foods.

Salmonella, a group of bacteria that can be spread by food handlers who don't wash their hands between food preparation can also be spread from animals to people, according to the FDA.

The illness, salmonellosis usually last four to seven days and most people who get infected recover without treatment. Salmonellosis develops 12 to 72 hours after the infection and includes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. About 450 people in the U.S. die from acute salmonellosis each year.

Consumers can take steps to protect themselves from foodborne illness at home including:

Consumers who have symptoms should contact their health care provider to report their symptoms and receive care.

According to Michigan Grown, a coalition of farmers and agribusinesses in the state, Michigan produces 68 million pounds of fresh cucumbers, totaling $15 million in sales in 2016.
