Tributes have been paid to a couple who reportedly "jumped" from a cliff edge at Whitby.
Police have confirmed that David Jeffcock, 80, and Susan Jeffcock, 74, died on July 30 after falling from the cliffs near to a footpath close to Whitby Abbey. The elderly couple were seen "hand-in-hand" before falling from the cliffs.
Before their deaths, a man told The Daily Mail how a pair were seen "jumping" from the cliff edge. An inquest is expected to examine the circumstances of their deaths later this month. T
The tragedy prompted a huge emergency response and the attendance of police, ambulances, mountain rescue personnel and a coastguard helicopter. Police later confirmed that two bodies had been recovered from the bottom of the cliff.
People have taken to social media to post their tributes and to express their sorrow about the couple's sudden deaths. Posting on Yorkshire Live's Facebook page, Louise wrote: "So sad they were a lovely couple." While Sara posted: "So very sad. Such a lovely couple. RIP."
Kris said: "Very sad to hear about this couple, and I feel for their families." And Diane wrote: "Very sad RIP thoughts are with the families."
Karen posted: "RIP so very sorry for your families its tragic my thoughts are with you." And Tracey posted: "How utterly devastating."
While Carole wrote: "Such a tragedy. Sincere condolences to all families and friends of the couple." And Jacqui posted: "How very sad for family and friends of this couple. Sending healing and prayers to all concerned."
An inquest into the deaths of Mr and Mrs Jeffcock is set to be held on Monday, September 22 at Northallerton Coroner's Court.
