ATMORE, Ala. (WALA) - Two men were arrested today after authorities say they were found in a wooded area near a prison in Atmore along with a backpack containing drugs and cell phones.
According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, its Law Enforcement Services Division and K-9 Bureau, along with Atmore and Poarch Creek police officers, responded to reports of possible trespassers at the Fountain Correctional Facility.
Authorities said K-9 handlers found the two suspects, identified as Derrick Bean and Keith Davis, in some woods near the facility. Also found was a backpack containing 448 grams of marijuana, 28 grams of methamphetamine, 8 grams of cocaine, fentanyl, a number of cell phones, and charging blocks, according to ADOC.
The men were taken to the Escambia County Jail.
Bean and Davis are charged with three counts of attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, prohibited activities, possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute, and first-degree marijuana possession.
In addition, Bean was also charged separately with third-degree possession of a controlled substance and second-degree promoting prison contraband.
ADOC said the investigation is ongoing and more charges may be pending.
