Seven Jefferson City area high school basketball teams were mentioned in the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association's initial statewide rankings, which were announced Monday.

Two teams -- the Eugene Eagles and the Tipton Lady Cardinals -- are ranked No. 2 in Class 2.

Eugene, which has won a district championship in each of the past three seasons, has won three of its first four games this season. The Eagles won the Eugene Tournament earlier this month and also won 62-53 against Peoria, Ill., Manual last Friday in the Norm Stewart Classic.

Tipton, which has been to the Final Four in four of the past five seasons, has won four of its first six games this season. The Lady Cardinals won the Tipton Tournament earlier this month and also won 59-54 last week against Helias.

The Fatima Lady Comets begin the season ranked No. 6 in Class 3. The Lady Comets, who are back-to-back district champions, were runners-up in the Principia Invitational earlier this month, losing to Class 3 No. 2 Principia in the championship game.

The St. Elizabeth Hornets are also a top-10 team to begin the season, ranking No. 7 in Class 1. The Hornets have won six of their first eight games this season. They have won six consecutive district titles.

Three more teams -- the California Lady Pintos, the Linn Lady Wildcats and the St. Elizabeth Lady Hornets -- are receiving votes outside the top 10 in their respective classes.

California, which has bumped up to Class 4 this season, has won three of its first five games. The Lady Pintos, who won a district title at the Class 3 level last season, were runners-up at the Tipton Tournament earlier this month.

Linn, which went 16-11 last season, started the 2024-25 season winning five of its first six games.

The Lady Wildcats, who are in Class 2 this season, took third place in the Eugene Tournament.

St. Elizabeth, which has won three consecutive Class 1 district titles, began the season with a 3-3 record. The Lady Hornets lost to sixth-ranked Macks Creek in the Eugene Tournament championship game.

On the boys side, the No. 1-ranked teams to begin the season are Oak Park in Class 6, Sikeston in Class 5, Vashon in Class 4, Principia in Class 3, Norwood in Class 2 and Chadwick in Class 1.

Vashon was the only one of the six teams to be the unanimous picks at No. 1 from an eight-member panel of coaches from across the state.

For the girls, the top-ranked teams are Incarnate Word in Class 6, Cardinal Ritter in Class 5, Ursuline Academy in Class 4, Fair Grove in Class 3, Skyline in Class 2 and Cairo in Class 1.

Incarnate Word and Cairo were both unanimous selections for the No. 1 ranking in their respective classes.

A new girls basketball poll will be announced next week and the boys basketball poll will be updated in two weeks.
