Firefighters battle two-alarm fire in downtown Baltimore apartment building

Baltimore City firefighters responded to a four-story apartment building fire in downtown Baltimore late Thursday night.

Units were called around 11:18 p.m. to the 100 block of West Saratoga Street, where they found heavy smoke and fire in the rear of the building, Baltimore City Fire Department spokesman John Marsh said.

A second alarm was called the incident a few minutes later, he said, before it was quickly contained.

All residents of the building, which has about six apartments, Marsh said, were evacuated and are being assisted by the Red Cross. No injuries of residents or firefighters were reported.

The fire was believed to have originated in the back of the building, the spokesman said. An investigation is ongoing.

An apartment fire earlier this week on the 900 block of Calvert Street in the nearby Mount Vernon neighborhood left one dead.
