Nuno sets out clear Nottingham Forest transfer plan for deadline day

Moving fringe players on will form a key part of Nottingham Forest's work in the final hours of the transfer window.

The Reds have brought in ten signings so far and are on the verge of adding more. Right-back Nicolo Savona was introduced to the City Ground crowd prior to Sunday's 3-0 defeat to West Ham United, having become the club's latest arrival on Saturday.

Goalkeeper John Victor joined yesterday evening and left-back Cuiabano could follow him from Botafogo before the window closes, to take the number of summer additions into double-figures. A winger could also come in before tonight's 7pm deadline, with Forest assessing a number of options.

But with the bulk of his squad in place, finding new homes for those not part of his plans is the main focus for head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. He wants a dressing room made up of 22 or 23 versatile players and doesn't want anyone left kicking their heels with little chance of game time. With that in mind, the likes of Jota Silva, Omar Richards, Eric da Silva Moreira and Josh Bowler could all head elsewhere.

Asked if he expects departures before the window closes, Nuno said: "Yes, we have to do it. We want to have all the squad motivated.

"The club is trying to do that. We still have one day to go. After that, we will see the picture of our squad."

Nuno hit out at the slow pace of Forest's transfer business prior to their first game of the campaign. His options have been bolstered considerably by then, so is he happy with the group he has now?

"Let's see. I can answer that question better when it is complete," he said.

"We have good options that we need to get to know better. When the squad is complete then we can make a better judgement."

Nuno's preference for working with a small squad is well-known, but there is a balance to be struck for the Reds this term. They will be competing on four fronts this time around as they are in Europe for the first time in three decades.

In the build-up to the weekend's clash, Nuno had addressed what he wants his dressing room to look like. He had said: "We need numbers, but not over. The worst thing you can have is frustration (among the players).

"That's why one of the things I always believe is having everybody involved is better. But we need options.

"More than numbers, it is the versatility side of the squad. You can shorten the numbers as long as you have versatile players.

"Another big issue is how robust we are going to be facing this challenge. But I can not make my decision in terms of numbers if I am scared or afraid about players (being injured). No. It is trying to find solutions. If something happens, OK, we have it.

"In terms of numbers, I would say 22 or 23 players in the squad to face four competitions until January. That would be good for us. As long as we bring what we need before the end of the market, I think we are going to be OK."
