Kershaw County Fire, SC Forestry works to quell large brush fire

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Kershaw County Fire Service and SC Forestry are working to contain a brush fire in Bethune.

According to Fire Chief Matthew Bullard, Kershaw County Fire Service was dispatched to the 4600 block of Newman Road in Bethune about a brush fire around 6:30 Thursday evening.

Fire Chief Bullard said the fire is in a creek and swamp/marsh area that is preventing their 4-wheel drive vehicles from accessing it.

According to fire officials, SC Forestry was called to assist the effort and is on scene now with two bulldozers working to contain the fire.

The fire is said to be about 7 acres and is slow-moving, with no structures reported threatened.

Chief Bullard said the cause of the fire appears to be a downed power line from a broken pole.

Residents are urged to avoid the area to allow crews to work safely. Fire officials say crews will remain on scene until the fire is under control.
