Paul Finebaum had to bear the veiled dig from Georgia Bulldogs football coach Kirby Smart.
Finebaum should have seen it coming after his bleak comment on UGA quarterback Gunner Stockton.
"I would say that's a big 'not fine'. I know the team coalesced around him after the SEC Championship Game, but I was underwhelmed by what I saw from Gunner Stockton in the Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame," Finebaum had said last week on SportsCenter about the Bulldogs under Stockton's lead.
Which is precisely why Finebaum was jokingly hoping that Smart would not have caught the comment when he attended The Paul Finebaum Show later.
"I'm glad you missed an earlier interview I did on ESPN," Finebaum said.
Smart obviously gave him a hard time over his words.
"I'm excited. Gunner got your message. You did your job," Smart said.
Stockton taking on the starting role in a historically storied program like Georgia will inevitably come with questions like these. The national championship expectations surrounding the program will only make it worse. Only his performance will bear them out.
"Sorry about that one," Finebaum added to his tweet.
Whether he truly would be, or his original prediction will stand true about Stockton, will be a thing to look out for in the season.
