ATLANTA -- Family members of a missing 25-year-old pregnant woman are concerned that no one has heard from the expecting mother in a week after she left Piedmont Hospital.
Loved ones said Victoria Harris, who is five months pregnant, was last seen on May 16 at the hospital. Her sister, Brittaney Bethea, said Harris has schizoaffective disorder, which adds to their worry.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded to the hospital in the 1900 block of Peachtree Road just after midnight on May 17 to take a missing person's report about Harris. APD said its preliminary investigation indicated she left the hospital on her own will.
Family members said she was at the hospital to be evaluated. Bethea shared that Harris was admitted to the hospital on the 13th. She claimed the staff contacted her to let her know she would be held there.
"She stayed there the 13th, the 14th and the 15th and throughout that process, Piedmont was periodically updating me, just letting me know they were trying to find placement for her at a more stable inpatient mental health facility," she said.
Bethea believed her sister would be transferred on the 15th, but she said she later found out that the facility Harris was expecting to go to ended up rescinding the admission due to a mix-up. Bethea said she went to the hospital that day to make sure doctors knew he sister's medications.
But the next day, she said she found out the hospital had discharged her.
"I called to get an update to see if where they might have been able to find a placement for her, and the front desk just told me that she had been discharged."
Now, family members are concerned that she was discharged in a vulnerable state. Bethea said she serves as Harris's medical power of attorney.
"I was just really concerned that she was discharged in the state that she was without contacting me like they had done the days prior," she said.
"I do fear for my sister, not knowing maybe even how to get back over here from wherever in Atlanta," she said. "Not having any resources to figure it out and just kind of being out there in the elements with God knows what."
Bethea said her mother is distraught and drives around daily to look for Harris. Tearfully, Bethea stated her sister knows her phone number by memory. She hopes she can get into a position where she's with someone she trusts so that she can call her.
A police flyer from APD lists Harris as about 5 feet 5 inches tall. She has brown short locs and green eyes.
11Alive has reached out to Piedmont, but we have not heard back yet. Anyone who sees Harris is asked to contact APD.
