Colts to honor Jim Irsay, celebrate Blue Friday ahead of season opener

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) -- The Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday were gearing up for the new season with a series of events and tributes, including honoring the late Jim Isray and the celebrating of Blue Friday.

The Colts are set to kick off their season at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium against the Miami Dolphins. The leadup to the game will include Blue Friday, which includes the "bluing" of the downtown canal and a Colts 5K run, both open to the public.

During News 8's "Daybreak" on Wednesday, Larra Overton, a producer, host, and reporter for Colts Productions, highlighted the significance of the jersey patch honoring former team owner Irsay, noting his lasting impact and generosity. The 65-year-old died in his sleep on May 21 at a hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

During Blue Friday, Colts former running back Edgerrin James and the team mascot, Blue, will be present.

The Colts 5K run will finish on the 50-yard line of the team's home field, with a special run for kids 12 and younger.

Fans were encouraged to participate in the festivities and share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #ColtsLife.

The team is also preparing for the season opener with special activities planned throughout the day.

A decision on whether the stadium roof will be open or closed is typically made a few days in advance, with the final call announced on the morning of the game.
