Do Steelers have interest in Diontae Johnson? Here's what Mike Tomlin said

With the Diontae Johnson era coming to an end in Baltimore, there has been plenty of speculation about the Pittsburgh Steelers possibly having interest in the oft-disgruntled wide receiver.

On the surface, the connection makes sense. Not only did Johnson begin his career with the Steelers, but Pittsburgh has a need for more wide receiver depth, even when No. 1 wideout George Pickens is healthy.

But it's not that simple when it comes to Johnson and the Steelers reuniting. After all, as was the case with the Carolina Panthers and the Baltimore Ravens, Johnson became disgruntled with the Steelers and things didn't end well with his former team.

On the flip side, his frustration had to do with the offense and quarterback situation he was in, and both of those problems have been improved thanks to Arthur Smith and Russell Wilson.

On Sunday, head coach Mike Tomlin met with the media and was asked about the possibility of adding Johnson. Tomlin had nothing to say on the subject, in pure Tomlin fashion.

"I have nothing to add about someone who's not in our football team right now," Tomlin said, per ESPN's Brooke Pryor.

Even if the Steelers have interest, landing Johnson won't be easy. Because he was cut loose this late in the season, Johnson will be subject to waivers on Monday at 4 p.m. ET, and there are 25 teams ahead of the Steelers in the waiver wire order, which is based on record.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Johnson is "likely to be claimed" on Monday, and he listed the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers as possible landing spots.

The Chiefs have the last waiver priority, while the Chargers, who are coached by the brother of Johnson's latest former coach with the Ravens, are five spots ahead of the Steelers.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added that the Steelers are a team to keep an eye on as a possible landing spot for Johnson, although that seems more like speculation on his part than a report.

Despite how things ended with Johnson in Pittsburgh, the Steelers should put in a waiver claim and try to bring him back. He could provide a much-needed boost to Pittsburgh's offense for the playoffs, and he won't carry any long-term risk since he's a free agent in 2025.
