2 barges stuck in West Haven shoreline safely towed away

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - The two 140-foot barges stuck on the shoreline in West Haven have finally been towed away, after several unsuccessful attempts.

The two barges have been on quite the adventure over the last couple of days.

They broke free from their moorings in New Haven during Thursday's storm, finding a new home on a Milford beach.

Not long after, they backtracked, finding themselves on the West Haven shoreline early Friday morning.

"My husband got up, he saw lights flashing outside, was wondering, 'what's going on?'" said Colleen Manzo of West Hartford.

Colleen Manzo lives right on the water, the barges stuck just outside her house.

"It's like, it's Halloween," noted Manzo. "Is this like a trick for Halloween?"

Unfortunately, it was not a trick.

In fact, those massive barges were stuck there for days, drawing in crowds all day long.

"There's definitely been a lot of traffic down here," added Jill Foley of West Haven

After several failed attempts due to high winds or low tides, crews tried again.

On Sunday morning, waiting for high tide to come in, the key to success.

A sound of relief for some neighbors.

"I was actually quite concerned it was going to be here for a while because, you know, we have such a beautiful sunrise," said Manzo.

While they're glad to see it go, it's a memory they won't forget.

"I mean, it's probably a once and a lifetime thing to see," expressed Manzo.

"We took some pictures in front of it, I videoed it going back out, so definitely something we'll remember and I'm glad we definitely came," noted Foley.

The barges belonged to Buchanan Marine in New Haven. Their crews told Eyewitness News the barges will return to their home, and once again be put to work.
