Jet2 East Midlands Airport building set for demolition under expansion plans - Nottinghamshire Live

Jet2 is set to demolish its existing building at East Midlands Airport under a plan to expand its operations at the site. The airline operator says the East Midlands is one of its "key bases" across the country, giving it direct access to million of passengers flying to Mediterranean and European destinations.

Plans have now been lodged with North West Leicestershire District Council for Jet2 to demolish its existing ground operations and engineering building, located near the runway.

Documents lodged with the council say: "The proposal is to replace Jet2's existing ground operations and engineering facility with a new building which meets their needs into the future and provides a flexible and sustainable base."

Jet2 says the changes are needed to increase storage space for aeroplane parts in line with guidance from the Civil Aviation Authority.

A designated office space to grow the operation is also needed and the plans are now awaiting approval from the district council.

The council will have to confirm whether it agrees that the plans fall under "permitted development", where proposals largely relate to plans already approved.

The airline operator says its engineering team runs a 24/7 operation with between six and seven people working at any given time.

Operations then have 60 people in the building within a 24-hour period, split into day shift and night shift.

Jet2 adds in its application: "The airport provides Jet2 with direct access to millions of passengers across the East Midlands, South Yorkshire, and beyond, making it an ideal hub for holiday flights to popular Mediterranean and European destinations.

"By operating from EMA, Jet2 can serve a large catchment area with strong demand for package holidays, while avoiding congestion at larger airports."

The news comes after Jet2 recently announced an expansion of its flights to Greek destinations from East Midlands Airport.

Customers are now able to book their 2026 summer holidays to Olympus Riviera and Meganisi in Greece in response to rising demand for getaways to the country.

Olympus Riviera can be reached via flights to Thessaloniki Airport, with these scheduled from East Midlands Airport every Saturday between May 23 and October 3, 2026.
