According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, free-agent cornerback Cameron Sutton, who played one season with the Detroit Lions, can move forward in life with his legal troubles behind him.
Per Wilson, Sutton's agent shared that the player's case and charges stemming from a 2024 incident in Florida have now been dismissed.
While under contract with the Lions, Sutton was charged with domestic violence after allegedly hitting and choking his girlfriend at the time. The charge, stemming from a March 7 incident near Tampa, Fla., was a third-degree felony.
According to an affidavit obtained by the Tampa Bay Times, Sutton picked up his girlfriend and slammed her into a wall, then bit her on the neck. He followed that by choking her until she briefly lost consciousness.
Sutton fled the scene before police arrived and went dark, disconnecting communication with the outside world. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for his arrest. When the news broke, the 30-year-old player was actually at the Lions' training facility.
The Lions released Sutton shortly after learning the details of the incident.
"He was actually in our building (when the news broke)," team president Rod Wood told Fox 2 in an interview last March. "We found him. He was down with our strength staff. He just kinda showed up unexpectedly to work out. We were able to talk to him in person, not me, but other members of the staff, and he left the building. We released him the next day, and no one has spoken to him since."
After his release from the Lions, Sutton rejoined the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year deal for a second stint with the franchise, but served an eight-game suspension to start the season.
Following an unsuccessful reunion in Pittsburgh -- where Sutton registered just 15 tackles and three passes defended in nine games -- the Steelers opted not to re-sign him.
