England failed to engage in a 'real Test match' with Australia, according to Shaun Wane

Shaun Wane has delivered a brutally honest verdict on England's opening Ashes defeat, conceding that his side failed to make the contest a "real Test match" against Australia.

England were soundly beaten 26-6 at Wembley on Saturday, with Kevin Walters' Kangaroos dominating from start to finish.

Leading 8-0 at half-time, the visitors added another 18 points after the break, while Daryl Clark's late try was England's only response.

Speaking to the media at England's training base in Manchester, Wane said the performance looked even worse on replay, and he shouldered responsibility for the lacklustre showing.

"(I've watched it back) about 12 times and I definitely feel worse," Wane admitted. "We did some good things, but just not enough, and I don't think it was a real Test match.

"They were too good, they were worthy winners, and we really didn't challenge them, which is the most disappointing thing.

"They didn't see anywhere near the best of us, and that's down to me. It's something we have to fix this week."

With England now needing victory in Saturday's second Test at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium to keep the series alive, Wane's challenge is clear: to turn frustration into fight and rediscover the intensity that defines a true Ashes battle.
