FC Dallas follows familiar path, emphasizes defense with 2025 MLS SuperDraft selections

FC Dallas used two of its three picks on defenders, starting with Oregon State standout Enzo Newman.

About a year ago, FC Dallas used its first-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft to take an Oregon State standout. The club followed a familiar path with its first-rounder in this year's event.

FC Dallas emphasized defense with two of its three picks in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft, starting with its selection of Oregon State product Enzo Newman at 11th overall. Newman is the fourth Oregon State player drafted by the club in recent years. FCD used a first-rounder on midfielder Tsiki Ntsabeleng in 2022, then added striker Logan Farrington and defender Turner Humphrey with its first- and second-round picks in 2024.

Newman, 19, has played primarily at right back over the last two years in Corvallis, Oregon. He started 21 matches throughout his collegiate career, notching six assists. He worked his way up the club ranks at the Murrieta Soccer Academy in California before landing at Oregon State.

"Enzo comes from a great program at Oregon State and he's a young right back with a big future," FC Dallas head coach Eric Quill said in an interview with fcdallas.com. "We're a club that develops players so I think he's coming to the right club for him. We have big plans for him and once we get him in for preseason to see his growth, I can see great things coming from him."

FCD briefly shifted focus toward attacking with its second-round pick, drafting Indiana forward Sam Sarver at 41st overall. Sarver had a productive collegiate career, contributing 24 goals and 22 assists in four seasons with the Hoosiers.

Quill described Sarver as a dynamic forward with the ability to play "anywhere in the top three positions."

To finish things out, FCD selected Penn State defender Mohamed "Momo" Cisset with its third-round pick. Cisset has lined up at centerback throughout his time at Penn State, starting 25 matches over the last two years. His résumé includes national team experience, making Mali's roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
