The recent streak of new medical office construction continues in Chesterfield.

Richmond Aesthetic Surgery held a groundbreaking ceremony last week for a 33,000-square-foot, three-story building in the Cosby Village Square development.

The new building at 15545 Cosby Drive would add to Richmond Aesthetic's other location in Short Pump.

The practice is owned by Dr. Neil Zemmel, who said he's expanding to southwest Chesterfield to get closer to existing and future patients. Zemmel noted the area is experiencing population growth and new development. Near his practice's upcoming location is a proposed mixed-use development, Nunnally Village, where HCA is planning to open a hospital.

"We have a tremendous draw of patients from this very area, from Chesterfield all the way down to Petersburg through Amelia. With all the development going on down here, we thought it would be a good idea to open a second location," Zemmel said in remarks during the event.

Chesterfield Planning Commissioner Tommy Owens also shared remarks at the ceremony.

The new office is slated to open in the spring or summer of next year. The plastic surgery practice and Dermlounge, a medical spa concept that's also owned by Zemmel, would occupy 5,500 square feet of the building. The rest of the building would be leased out to other medical users.

Ellen Long of Taylor Long Properties is handling the office's leasing.

The $12 million project's general contractor is Loughridge & Co. PSH+ is the architect, and Townes Site Engineering was also tapped for the project. Southern Bank is financing the project. Construction on the building kicked off several months earlier.

Construction is already underway on the 33,000-square-foot building that would be home to Richmond Aesthetic Surgery's second location and other tenants.

Zemmel's practice was founded in 2007 and originally operated on the St Francis Medical Center campus. Its Short Pump location is at 11934 W. Broad St., where it has operated since late 2016.

Zemmel bought the Chesterfield site last year from Main Street Homes, which is the developer behind the Cosby Village Square project being built near the Hull Street and Otterdale Road intersection. Other businesses already open at the center include Kline's Dairy Bar, Starbucks, Chipotle and Dental Care at Cosby Village.

Richmond Aesthetic's project is one of several new medical office buildings in the works in Chesterfield.

Bon Secours broke ground in July on a 90,000-square-foot office and outpatient surgical center near St. Francis hospital. Later that same month and on an adjacent property, Virginia Physicians for Women held a ceremony to commemorate the start of construction on a 23,000-square-foot medical office. In May, VCU Health held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 100,000-square-foot office and surgical center near the Chesterfield courthouse.
