"Giant" of Keighley sport dies as clubs pay tribute to former chairman

IT has been a sad week for sport in Keighley, as two of the district's biggest clubs mourn the death of a giant of a man.

Bob Chapman used to be chairman at both Keighley Cougars and Keighley Cricket Club, with both sides expressing their condolences on social media on Sunday afternoon.

Bob joined Cougars as a director in 1996, and he was their chairman at the turn of the century as they battled to avoid liquidation when their major investor said he was no longer able to put money into the club

Bob fought hard to save the Cougars, desperately trying to thrash out a crisis plan with Bradford Council, and though it was to no avail, thankfully the club reformed soon after.

Tributes have poured in for Bob across social media, who was widely respected as both a businessman and person.

He was also fine rugby league player himself, and he featured for Keighley in the centres during the 1960s.

Long after leaving his role as chairman, Bob was back at Cougar Park in 2015 as a member of the club's Ex-Players' Association.

He was there to attend the opening of the Terry Hollindrake Stand, named after one of Keighley's greatest ever players, who had died earlier that year.

While his formal association with Cougars was over by that point, he was still heavily involved at Keighley Cricket Club.

They have not forgotten everything he did for them in the two decades he spent there, writing on their official Facebook page: "It is with a heavy heart the club has learned that former chairman Robert Chapman has sadly passed away.

"Bob was instrumental in the resurgence of our great club and secured us our future at Lawkholme Lane for many years to come through hard work and dedication.

"Our thoughts and condolences go out to all Bob's family and friends.

"Thanks for all the memories you've given us Bob and may you rest in peace."

As well as being a top administrator, Bob endeared himself to people at the cricket club with his human touch.

One such example saw him unveil a memorial bench at the ground in 2008 for the much-loved Brian Wilkinson.

Paid for by the club, that served as a fitting tribute to Brian, who was a player, groundsman and barman at the club for almost 50 years.

Now the tributes are being paid to Bob himself, with Cougars writing: "Keighley Cougars are saddened to learn of the passing of former club chairman Bob Chapman.

Our condolences at this difficult time go to Bob's family and friends.

"Once a Cougar, always a Cougar."

It has been a sad month for the club on the whole, as another dedicated servant, this time from the pre-Cougars days, has also died.

Ken Hemsley passed away at the start of the month, with the club paying tribute to him too.

They wrote: "The club is saddened to hear of the passing of Ken Hemsley, who was our well-loved club physio in the 1970s and 1980s.

"We send our condolences to Ken's family at this sad time."
