Fact Check: UP wedding ruckus viral as RSS attack on Catholic school in Telangana

This video actually shows a crowd looting snacks and other food items at a mass wedding in Hamirpur, UP.

A video of a large crowd creating a ruckus is making the rounds on social media. In it, people can be seen rushing hither and thither, hurling cartons. Those sharing the video claimed that it was from Telangana, where Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers attacked a Catholic school.

Sharing the video on X, one person wrote, "After attacking Muslims, RSS extremists have now turned their violence towards Christians. At St. Mother Teresa Catholic School in Mancherial, Telangana, they attacked the principal, Fr. Raimon Joseph, and forcibly marked his forehead with a tilak. This is not Gandhi's India."

India Today Fact Check found that the video actually shows a crowd looting snacks and other food items at a wedding in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur.

Reverse searching keyframes from the viral video led us to the same clip shared by Jist News on Instagram on November 27. Its caption noted that at a mass wedding in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur, chaos ensued when people rushed toward the snack counters after the ceremonies, leading to a stampede-like situation. Several people reportedly fell and were injured.

We found several news reports about the incident. According to an Indian Express report, it was a government-sponsored mass wedding held on November 25 at the playground of Swami Brahmanand Vidyalaya in Rath town. Guests rushed to grab snacks and looted boxes of chips and other food items.

Moreover, we found no credible news reports of any recent attack on a Catholic school in Telangana. However, in April 2024, a school in Telangana was attacked over a saffron clothing dispute. As per a report by the Indian Express, a missionary-run school in the Mancherial district was attacked by a group of villagers after students dressed in saffron religious clothing were reportedly informed that their parents needed prior approval for them to attend school without the standard uniform.

As per reports, some men surrounded Principal Joseph, beat him up, and forcibly applied a tilak on his forehead.

Thus, it is evident that the video does not show an RSS attack on a Catholic school in Telangana.
