Why Raila Odinga's body was put on display for the public

The body of former Prime Minister of Kenya, Raila Odinga, was laid in state and publicly displayed to the people of the country for viewing.

This followed a directive by President William Ruto, who declared seven days of national mourning and announced that Odinga would be accorded a state funeral.

Additionally, according to the family, it was Odinga's wish to be laid to rest as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours of his passing.

According to streamlinefeed.co.ke, a news portal in Kenya, the public display of the former statesman's body also aligns with the protocols of state funerals in Kenya to allow citizens and dignitaries to pay their final respects.

It said that the protocols also include formal military procession.

"State funerals in Kenya typically follow elaborate protocols, including a public viewing period and a formal military procession," the news portal explained.

The state funeral for Odinga places him in a select group of Kenyan leaders, including former Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Daniel arap Moi, who have received similar state recognitions.

In Kenya, state funerals are generally reserved for sitting or retired Heads of State and Chiefs of Defence Forces.
