Aadhaar update fact-check: No, you still can't change name, DoB or mobile number online - UIDAI website shows

Several media reports claimed that Aadhaar cardholders can now update their name, date of birth, and mobile number online. However, the UIDAI website confirms this is not true. As of now, only address updates can be done online, while other changes still require visiting an enrolment centre.

Several media reports have claimed that from November 1, 2025, Aadhaar cardholders can now update their name, date of birth, or mobile number online through the myAadhaar portal. However, a closer look at the UIDAI's official website reveals otherwise. The Aadhaar update process remains the same -- you can only update your address online, while all other changes still require a visit to an Aadhaar enrolment centre.

What the UIDAI website actually says

According to the UIDAI portal, only address updates can currently be done online. All other demographic details -- such as name, date of birth/age, gender, mobile number, email address, relationship status, and information-sharing consent -- still require an in-person visit to an Aadhaar enrolment centre.

So, if you are planning to update your mobile number or correct your name, you still have to go offline.

Aadhaar details you can update

Demographic information:

Name, Address, Date of Birth/Age, Gender, Mobile Number, Email Address, Relationship Status and Information Sharing Consent.

Biometric Information:

Iris, Fingerprints, Facial Photograph.

What can be updated online

When we checked the UIDAI website, we found that only a limited set of online services is currently active. Here's what you can do through the myAadhaar portal:

In short: The online update facility is not new -- it mainly covers address and document updates, as it has for years.

Here's what can be changed only offline:

Demographic updates: Name, Date of Birth / Age, Gender, Mobile Number, Email Address, Relationship Status, and Information Sharing Consent.

Biometric updates: Iris, Fingerprints, and Facial Photograph.

During this process, the operator collects your documents and verifies them on the spot. You'll also need to complete biometric authentication and pay a small fee.

What the FAQs on UIDAI portal confirm

The UIDAI FAQs make the picture clear:

Q. Where can I update my mobile number?

A. You can update your mobile number only by visiting an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. You can locate one using the Bhuvan Aadhaar Portal.

Q. What updates can be made online?

A. You can only update your address or upload supporting documents online.

The UIDAI further clarifies:

"You cannot update your mobile number online. You must visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre in person. You can book an appointment online but will need to provide your current mobile number for the booking process."

It further explains the online mode of update, "The online mode offers address update to the Aadhaar number holders where the Aadhaar number holder can directly place the address update request on the myAadhaar portal. The Aadhaar number holder needs to have mobile number registered with Aadhaar for using this service. The Aadhaar number is required to login to the portal by the Aadhaar number holder. The Aadhaar number holder is authenticated using sent OTP on his/her registered mobile number. To complete the update process, Aadhaar number holder needs to upload the

supporting POA documents".

On the update process at Aadhaar enrolment centre, the portal says, "Aadhaar number holders place the demographic/biometric update request with the help of an operator at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. In such a case, the documentary evidence is collected by the operator at the time of accepting the request. The document verification by the verifier also happens at the time of placing the update request."

No official UIDAI announcement on the update process (online or offline) change until now

As of now, UIDAI has not issued any official statement confirming that demographic details such as name, DoB, or mobile number can be updated online.

The existing process remains unchanged. The only online update allowed continues to be address change.

Summing up..

Despite media buzz, the Aadhaar update process remains the same. You can update your address online, but for name, date of birth, or mobile number, you still have to visit the Aadhaar enrolment centre in person. Until UIDAI officially announces a change, it's best to rely only on verified information available on its official portal -- uidai.gov.in
