Crowdfunding project to publish footballing history of Ellesmere Port

AN ELLESMERE Port historian and author is hoping to shed a light on the important role of football in the town's history.

Celia Webber, president and founder of the Ellesmere Port Local & Family History Society, has researched, edited and written six 'Memory' books on the town and now hopes to raise funds for a new title, 'How Football Promoted Ellesmere Port'.

Celia, who was a producer on the impressive 'Help Save Ellesmere Port's History' animation, which gained tens of thousands of views when it was released online last year, has set up a crowdfunding page to cover the cost of publishing the new volume.

OTHER NEWS:

The book will be divided into 10 chapters covering Vauxhall Motors FC, past football history and heroes dating back to the 1880s, York Road football ground, the 'glory days' when Ellesmere Port Town won the Cheshire County League Championship four times in five years (1957-1962), Thornton Road Stadium, and Ellesmere Port FC today with images of local and works teams.

The crowdfunding project hopes to raise enough money to publish an initial 750 copies of the football-focused book, with several Ellesmere Port teams having already donated, including Vauxhall Motors FC who are facilitating the bid.

Celia and the organisers hope that the book will help to inform and inspire many young players in the town who might be unaware of its rich footballing history.
