WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- In New Hanover County, commissioners are concerned about budget issues, particularly a change to the county's tax rate.
A revised tax rate based on commissioner feedback would bring the property tax rate down from 45 cents per $100 of value to just under 34 cents.
But that might not help homeowners, since a re-evaluation of properties in January led to the average value of homes in the county going up by more than 50 percent.
Commissioner Leann Pierce said the revised rate would bring in money that she feels needs to stay with the county's residents.
"39 million dollars more in the county budget and that's just not something that I think is the right time for us to do," Pierce said. "Folks are having a hard time right now and we need to keep money in our, our households of New Hanover County and not increase our taxes."
Pierce said the 29 cents per $100 of value would be revenue-neutral.
The tax rate will be discussed at the County Commissioners meeting, beginning at 4 pm on June 2nd.
The budget is expected to be approved by the end of June.
