WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Wilmington Police say they have arrested a man on fentanyl charges after a vehicle accident.
The Wilmington Police Department's Narcotics Investigations Division, with assistance from the Cape Fear Regional SWAT team and NHSO K-9 unit, concluded a month-long investigation with the arrest of James Flythe, 47, of Newark, New Jersey.
Police say Flythe was traveling in a vehicle on South College Road when SWAT attempted to stop him and take him into custody. He kept driving and turned west on Randall Parkway, and officers terminated the pursuit due to the man's erratic behavior and out of an abundance of caution for nearby motorists and pedestrians.
Police say Flythe continued until he ran a red light and collided with another vehicle at Randall Parkway and South Kerr Avenue. He was taken into custody by the SWAT team a short time later, and police say detectives recovered approximately 700 dosage units of fentanyl from his vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle that was hit received minor injuries during the collision and was treated at the scene. Flythe had minor injuries as well and was taken to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Flythe has been charged with Trafficking Fentanyl by Transportation, Trafficking Fentanyl by Possession, Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Schedule II Controlled Substance, Maintain a Vehicle for Drug Sales, Manufacture/Sell/Deliver within 1000 Feet of a Day Care, and Felony Flee to Elude.
Police say a subsequent search warrant was also served in the 900 block of Coosaw Place in Wilmington in connection with the case, where police recovered a stolen firearm, 10 grams of marijuana, more than $3,000 in cash, marijuana extracts, and a scale.
Armond Hughley, 19, was also arrested there.
Hughley has been charged with Possession with Intent to Manufacture/Sell/Deliver Schedule VI Controlled Substance and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
