Tragedy struck in Enugu over the weekend as a 22-year-old hairstylist, Miss Odama Mary Agado, allegedly took her own life after discovering her boyfriend's infidelity.
The young woman, who hailed from Woleche-Ipuole, Yahe Ward in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, was reported to have ingested a poisonous substance, suspected to be sniper, following the emotional breakdown.
According to Vanguard, Mary had been living and working in Enugu, where she was said to be doing well in her hairstyling business. She reportedly bought a car and rented an apartment for her boyfriend -- a gesture that now painfully underscores the depth of her affection.
A family source, identified as Daniel, told journalists that Mary became heartbroken after she visited her boyfriend last Friday and met him with another woman in the apartment she had secured for him.
"Out of anger, she left for her own apartment and called her mother, narrating what happened. She told her mother to take heart and that she would not live again," Daniel recounted.
Tragically, Mary's mother, who allegedly had no airtime to return the call, was unable to reach her daughter before the incident occurred. Hours later, she reportedly received a distress call that Mary had ingested poison and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Doctors battled to save her life but were unsuccessful. She was confirmed dead later that evening, and her body was transported to her hometown in Yala, where she was buried immediately on Saturday.
"Once the body arrived, we dug a grave and buried her. She was too young for a prolonged burial process. Some believe she was spiritually influenced, but nothing can bring her back now," the family source lamented.
The family, however, chose not to involve the police, maintaining that Mary's death was a case of suicide.
The heartbreaking incident has left residents of Enugu and Yala in deep shock, reigniting conversations about mental health awareness and emotional resilience among young people.
