There's one upcoming franchise-first in House of the Dragon that will make up for a moment missing in Game of Thrones. House of the Dragon season 3 is in the works, following up on the divisive second season. The biggest promises for the upcoming run look to right a common critique of season 2: more dragons, more battles.
House of the Dragon season 2's ending directly set up one of these battles, a naval conflict known as the Battle of the Gullet. Without spoiling the outcome, this battle is between the forces of the Blacks and the Greens on the Gullet, where Corlys Velaryon has set up a blockade, preventing trade from reaching King's Landing.
House Of The Dragon Season 3 Will Have The GOT Franchise's First Naval Battle
With so many battles in the Game of Thrones franchise, it's strange to think there's never been a full-fledged naval battle in the scope of the Battle of the Bastards. Naval battles are, of course, expensive and difficult to film, and that makes the upcoming season even more exciting.
The battle will see the forces of the Triarchy sailing to King's Landing, hoping to break the Velaryon blockade. Characters like Lord Corlys, Tyland Lannister, and the Dragonseeds were all shown gearing up for the conflict, meaning it will not only be fleets of ships, but also dragonriders.
Game Of Thrones Only Had Brief Naval Skirmishes
Game of Thrones had its moments of naval conflict. We saw ambushes, like Euron Greyjoy arriving on the sea to cut off Daenerys and her allies (multiple times), and coastal sieges like the Battle of the Blackwater Bay, the Slavers' attempt to retake Meereen, and the Unsullied's capture of Casterly Rock.
There's never been a full-scale fleet battle, with both sides bringing prominent numbers of warships to meet in the ocean. These have been described at multiple points in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire novels, but have just never made it to the screen adaptations, until now.
The Battle Of The Blackwater Left Out The King's Landing Navy
The early seasons of Game of Thrones were notably on a much lower budget than where the series ended up. Because of this, battles were trimmed down and the forces of armies by almost every house were downplayed to fit that scale. For example, the Night's Watch is much smaller in the TV show than in the books.
In A Clash of Kings, the Battle of the Blackwater plays out pretty similarly to how it does in the show, but King's Landing actually has a navy (not as big as Stannis') to defend its shores. In the show, Tyrion sends out one small boat with the wildfire, skipping over the naval battle for simplicity.
House of the Dragon's Battle of the Gullet will be even more epic than what this could have been. While it won't have wildfire, dragons should provide equal entertainment.
