Dizziness and vertigo may signal this chronic disease

Have you ever felt dizzy or experienced vertigo? These symptoms might be more important than you think.

A new study from Peking University shows that people who often feel dizzy or have vertigo are more likely to suffer from migraines.

The research was led by Tongxiang Diao and his team. They wanted to understand if dizziness and vertigo are connected to migraines. To find out, they collected information from 708 nurses working at a large hospital.

These participants were divided into three groups: those with no headaches, those with migraines, and those with other types of headaches. The researchers then looked at how often dizziness and vertigo occurred in each group.

Here's what they discovered: 28.7% of the nurses reported having headaches, and among them, 13.3% had migraines. A total of 235 people said they had experienced dizziness or vertigo. When the researchers looked closely, they found that people who had dizziness or vertigo were much more likely to also have headaches, especially migraines.

In fact, those with vertigo were nearly three times more likely to have migraines or other headaches. Even more surprising, people who experienced dizziness were over eight times more likely to suffer from migraines.

This is an important discovery. Migraines aren't just normal headaches -- they can be very painful and come with other symptoms like nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. They can make daily life hard. So knowing that dizziness and vertigo could be early warning signs of migraines means that doctors might be able to diagnose and treat migraines sooner.

Sometimes, people who don't show clear signs of vertigo may still have balance problems linked to a kind of migraine called vestibular migraine. These cases can be missed without proper evaluation. This study suggests that if someone reports dizziness -- even without full vertigo -- doctors should consider checking for migraines too.

If you or someone you know often feels dizzy or has vertigo, it's a good idea to talk to a doctor. Getting help early could lead to better treatment and an easier time managing migraines.
