JAC's new T9 to boost brand's green energy fleet ...plug-in hybrid double cab to make Namibian debut in 2026

The highly-anticipated plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) from JAC Motors is expected to grace Namibian showrooms by the beginning of next year.

The new double cab T9 2.0L TGDI PHEV, powered by a robust 2.0L turbo-petrol engine and supported by two Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), one at the front and another at the rear, is expected to be available domestically during the first quarter of 2026.

This is as technical teams in South Africa are already testing the T9 PHEV under African conditions, to gather data on performance, energy efficiency, fuel consumption and off-road capability, ensuring it meets and even exceeds customer expectations.

A multi-link rigid axle rear suspension and Electronic Differential Locks on both axles enhance the T9 2.0L TGDI PHEV's off-road capability while an impressive braked towing mass of 3 500 kg ensures it can effortlessly haul horseboxes, off-road trailers and caravans.

"When the combined power of the 2.0L turbo-petrol engine and the two electric motors are engaged, the T9 PHEV delivers an impressive 290 kW and 670 Nm of peak torque," said Karl-Heinz Göbel, CEO of JAC Motors South Africa. "Even when the batteries are depleted, the 2.0L engine provides sufficient performance to maintain your driving style."

Charging for the hybrid twin-cab is also said to be convenient as it supports both AC and DC charging standards. A full charge is expected to take one hour 25 minutes at a DC fast charger, while charging at home with an AC charger is set to take four-and-a-half hours.

The T9 PHEV enhances its already impressive safety features with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), adding key technologies such as Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), and Driver Monitor System (DMS), among others.

"We're excited to offer southern African motorists an alternative to traditional double-cab bakkies with our expanding T-Series line-up," Göbel added.

Meanwhile, JAC Motors South Africa recently announced sales of its flagship T9 grew 30% year-over-year by July 2025, following its local launch in May 2024. The T9 continues to earn a strong reputation for fuel efficiency and exceptional value, supported by an extensive specification list. This performance was central to a 36% year-over-year sales increase across the T-Series, which also includes the T8 and T6 double-cab line-ups. For the same period, JAC Motors' total sales increased 49% year-over-year.

JAC Motors also recently announced the upcoming launch of its limited-edition T9 Hunter and T9 PHEV, which will further drive sales growth of the T-Series. The range also gains a T6 2.0L CTi single-cab, expanding customer choice and strengthening the line-up.

"We are privileged to represent a well-established brand with more than 60 years of heritage, operating in over 130 countries," said Göbel.

"We are excited to introduce state-of-the-art electric vehicles to our local range," said Göbel.

"The T9 PHEV further strengthens our line-up, giving customers the chance to embrace green-energy mobility and joins the growing trend of environmentally friendly, innovative and sustainable vehicles," Göbel concluded.

JAC Motors in southern Africa celebrates eight years of regional trading in September 2025. With more than 70 dealers across the region, including Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Eswatini, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Mozambique (independent), the company continues to expand its footprint, ensuring world-class after-sales service and delivering a consistently positive customer experience throughout the region.
