The National Weather Service in Buffalo issued a freeze warning for parts of western and central New York from 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, through 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29.
The warning covers Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga, northern Erie and Genesee counties - which includes cities such as Buffalo, Rochester, Batavia, Medina, Newark, Fair Haven and Niagara Falls.
Forecasters say folks in those counties should expect sub-freezing temperatures overnight, with lows predicted to drop into the upper 20s to near 30 degrees, except in areas close to the Lake Ontario shoreline.
The cold temperatures could kill crops, harm sensitive plants, and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Residents are advised to cover or bring indoors any tender vegetation and protect outdoor pipes and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing.
