Siemens has launched its new high-performance drive system, Sinamics S220, following Sinamics S120. The new system signifies a leap in performance with the CU320-3 control unit and software version 6.6
As part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, Sinamics S220 provides a drive system with comprehensive simulation, analysis capabilities and advanced connectivity, enabling full integration into digital workflows.
The newly developed control unit CU320-3 can operate up to 12 axes on a single unit, allowing the system to achieve a higher level of integration density.
The built-in multicore processor delivers the required computing power, while the Drive-Cliq-Express interface, with a 1Gbit/s speed, ensures a fast data transfer. A test-pulse method using three voltage sensors per axis enables sensorless control with near-encoder quality, while improving energy efficiency and robustness.
Sinamics S220 has been reconceived to meet the demands of digital transformation. The targeted generation of high-quality field data unlocks new business models in Industry 4.0.
High-frequency data transmission for predictive maintenance occurs via the X128 interface. Integration with the TIA Portal and virtual commissioning with DriveSim Designer significantly improves the engineering workflow.
The Smart Drive Interface is available as a compact panel, SDI S220, directly on the CU320-3 or as a remote version; an optional Smart WiFi adapter can enable flexible remote access.
The Sinamics S220 drive system offers a broad performance spectrum for industrial applications. Upon market launch, air-cooled motor modules in book-size and chassis designs, with a voltage range of 3AC 380-480V, will be available.
The rated current ranges from 1.1kW to 900kW and can be expanded to 6.984kW through an eight-fold parallel connection. For power supply, regenerative active infeeds spanning from 210kW to 921kW are available and scalable through parallel connection.
In addition, air-cooled universal modules are introduced, which can be operated flexibly as motor modules or active line modules. Six devices cover the entire functional and performance range for spare parts cases, enabling rapid adaptation to changing requirements.
The Sinamics S220 features software version 6.6, and the new safety architecture decreases the safety cycle from 12ms to 4ms, leading to faster reactions and higher productivity.
Automatic background tests ensure uninterrupted operation, while offline parameterisable safety functions simplify engineering. The drive is SIL 3 certified across all operating states and provides the required level of safety in critical applications.
The Sinamics S220 was created in a secure development process in accordance with IEC 62443-4-1, and is independently certified by TÜV SÜD.
The drive system contains various integrated safety functions, including user and access control, encrypted drive data, and integrity and authentication checks for firmware and configuration data. These features help to enhance resilience against cybersecurity risks.
The compact design of Sinamics S220 saves space, while resource-saving materials and high reparability and recyclability help reduce the carbon impact. Industrial Edge applications allow the capture and visualisation of energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.
The ISO 14021-certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) documents its environmental performance throughout the lifecycle, underscoring Siemens' commitment to sustainable industrial solutions.
