Thiruvananthapuram: In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Parassala police on Tuesday arrested a 23-year-old man with 50kg of ganja that was transported to Thiruvananthapuram for large-scale distribution. Sharon, alias Kannan, from Karikonom Kunnil near Veliyannoor, Vellanad was taken into custody by the Dansaf squad under the district police chief.According to police, Sharon is a key distributor in a well-organised network that sources ganja from Naxal-affected regions of Andhra Pradesh before transporting it to the state capital. Based on confidential intelligence inputs, Dansaf team kept him under surveillance for nearly a month. Investigators received specific information that Sharon was bringing a fresh consignment in a car from Andhra Pradesh. Acting on the tip-off, police intensified checks across the border over the past two days. On Monday night, Dansaf team intercepted Sharon's vehicle during a routine inspection at Pavathiyamvilai near Parassala. A thorough search revealed multiple bags packed with ganja concealed inside the vehicle. During interrogation, Sharon admitted that he intended to distribute the consignment to various dealers in Thiruvananthapuram. Police also recovered crucial information from his mobile phone, including details of retail peddlers who previously bought ganja from him. The list reportedly includes individuals ranging from tech workers in Kazhakkoottam to students from several colleges in the district. Police have intensified efforts to trace the wider network and expect more arrests in the coming days. The accused was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days, police said.
