CHAPEL HILL -- Grimsley is bringing the championship hardware back to Greensboro.
The Whirlies completed a perfect season on Friday, beating Rolesville, 35-23, to win the state 4A football championship in Chapel Hill. Grimsley (16-0) claimed its ninth state championship and first since the spring 2021 season.
Also, it was the second victory for Grimsley over the Rams this season after the Whirlies took a 35-20 victory on the road in week two. This time, the victory meant a lot more.
Ryan Debow put the final touch on the championship victory with an interception, his second of the game, with 3:43 left to play.
At the 4:30 mark, the Whirlies offense took care of its end of the deal when Faizon Brandon and Hudson Cooper hooked up on a 63-yard scoring play. Brandon threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, finishing at 9-for-13 for 182 yards and one interception. He was named the game's most vaulable player.
Rolesville (14-2) scored a touchdown as time expired to set the final score. The Rams were trying to win their first title in the program's brief history.
Mitchell Summers rushed foir more than 100 yards before going out in the third quarter with an apparent injury. He played sporadically after that. He closed with 126 yards on 26 carries.
Bryce Davis of Grimsley was named the game's outstanding defensive player, and Summers won offensive player of the game.
