THREE Cumbrian trailblazers who are shaping the future of British agriculture have been celebrated in a ceremony at the House of Lords in Westminster.
CARAS (The Council for Awards of the Royal Agricultural Societies) awarded 32 people 29 with associateships ARAgS and three with Fellowships FRAgS.
Alistair Mackintosh, a Ravenglass beef and sheep farmer, and chair of Red Tractor Assurance was presented with a FRAgS; Andrew Newbold of Killington Farm, Kirkby Lonsdale, a ARAg'S and Ian Powley of Brisco, Carlisle. a ARAgS.
The awards highlight individuals who have gone above and beyond, driving change in sustainable agriculture, supporting charities, and pushing the boundaries of research and technology. From advancing traditional farming practices to taking on voluntary roles that strengthen the sector, these honourees are transforming the industry for the better.
Andy Newbold said: "I am honoured, surprised and delighted to receive this award. My sincere congratulations go to all the recipients, its humbling to be the room with so many well deserving people. The credit for this award goes to so many people who have helped, encouraged and supported me on this journey. You know who you are."
Alistair Mackintosh said: "I was both touched and honoured to receive this award. I'm sure there are many more who would deserve this. I try to do all I can to promote how important our agricultural industry is."
Ian Powley said: "What a total surprise and I thought what on earth am I doing here, but on speaking to the others they felt the same. But I was so humbled to receive this honour. I was also particularly pleased that both Lord Inglewood and Cumbrian MP Markus Campbell Savours turned up to support us at the ceremony."
