This Day in History: August 26

(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back at every day in 'This Day In History.'

On this date in 1920, the 19th Amendment was formally adopted into the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote.

The amendment came after more than 70 years of struggle by women's suffragists.

America's women's suffrage movement was founded in the mid-19th century by women who had become politically active through their work in the abolitionist and temperance movements.

At 8 a.m. on August 26, the package was signed by Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby.

Also on this day in Kentucky history, in 1995, an estimated 10,000 fans went out to watch Leslie County High School star Tim Couch play in Lexington for the first time.

The fan turnout is a Thoroughbred Bowl record.

He lived up to all the hype, beating Highlands 44-to-42 in the 11th annual Thoroughbred Bowl at Tate's Creek High School.

Couch had three rushing and three passing touchdowns in that game.
