Typhoon to bring violent winds, rain to Japan's Izu Islands

TOKYO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon No. 23 is moving east over the sea south of Japan's Shikoku and is expected to approach the Izu Islands on Monday, bringing violent winds and heavy rain to the area.

The storm has a central pressure of 980 hectopascals, with maximum winds of 30 meters per second, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Winds may strengthen to 50 meters per second on the islands, with waves reaching 9 meters, the JMA predicted.

Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution against violent winds, landslides, flooding, swollen rivers, high waves, and to remain alert for lightning and tornado-like gusts. ■
