Student placements reopen at Prestwich mental health unit

Student placements have officially reopened in a specialist mental health unit.

Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) will now welcome students to its adult forensic services.

Placements will take place at the Riverside Centre and the Lowry Unit in Prestwich, with the first already underway.

Salli Midgley, chief nurse at GMMH, said: "We are proud to offer a wide range of student clinical placements across our footprint.

"Our services greatly benefit from the enthusiasm, curiosity and fresh perspectives that the students who join us on placement bring.

"They provide vital opportunities to reflect on our own practices, develop the skills of our staff, and work together to improve the delivery of care for service users and their families."

The placements, open to student nurses and trainee health professionals from universities across Greater Manchester and Lancashire, offer first-hand experience in forensic mental health care.

They are designed to help students build the skills and confidence needed to work in complex care environments, while also supporting the long-term sustainability of the NHS workforce.

The placements were paused while the trust carried out a two-year improvement programme for its adult forensic services.

Work included upgrading the learning environment in collaboration with NHS England, NHS Greater Manchester, higher education institutions, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

A small event was held on Monday, September 29 at the Riverside Centre to mark the return of student nurses.

Ms Midgley said: "We are so pleased to be in a position to welcome back student nurses to the Riverside Centre.

"Over the past two years, we have worked hard to transform this service, which includes improving ward environments, developing a clinical model to improve patient safety, and recruiting and retaining skilled, kind and compassionate staff."

Support for students has also been strengthened, with a focus on supervision, training, and collaboration with partner organisations.

Phoebe Ashleigh Siapno De Carlos, a student nurse from Manchester Metropolitan University currently on placement at the Riverside Centre, said: "During my placement, I have felt truly supported by the staff, who have welcomed me as part of their team.

"They consistently involve me in all aspects of care, which has given me valuable opportunities to expand my knowledge and develop my skills within the forensic mental health setting."

Placement opportunities are available to students from the University of Salford, The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Greater Manchester, and the University of Lancashire.
