In a Diwali marked by compassion and renewal, a 41-year-old woman's organs saved three lives as Fortis Mulund facilitated Mumbai's 44th organ donation of 2025
In a moving act of humanity and courage, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, enabled its fifth deceased organ donation of 2025, coinciding with Mumbai's 44th donation of the year. The donation, which took place on October 17, just before Diwali, brought hope and new beginnings to three critically ill patients, turning the festival of lights into one of healing and renewal.
The donor, Usha Indrasen Gound, a 41-year-old homemaker from Mulund (East), Mumbai, suffered a sudden collapse due to dizziness and was rushed to the hospital. Despite all medical efforts, she was declared brain dead. Her grieving family , her husband, 18-year-old son, and 15-year-old daughter made the selfless decision to donate her liver and both kidneys, ensuring that her legacy of kindness continues to live on.
One kidney was transplanted to a 29-year-old male at Fortis Mulund, the second was allocated by the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), Mumbai, to a recipient at a hospital in Kharghar, while her liver saved the life of a 59-year-old male at Fortis Mulund.
Reflecting on the significance of the family's decision, Dr. Vishal Beri, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Mulund, said, "While many individuals pledge to donate their organs, the ultimate decision lies with the family. Expressing one's wish and sensitising loved ones is crucial, as it empowers them to take this noble step during moments of grief."
He added, "In the true spirit of Diwali the festival of light and renewal this donor family chose to illuminate the lives of others even in their darkest hour. Their selflessness reminds us that hope can shine brightest in moments of loss."
Expressing his feelings, Indrasen Gound, the donor's husband, said, "In the midst of our grief, we found the strength to give the gift of life. Knowing that she lives on in others brings us comfort and peace. We hope our decision encourages others to consider the power of organ donation, as it truly is a life-changing gift."
Fortis Hospital, Mulund, extended heartfelt gratitude to the donor's family for their extraordinary courage and to the ZTCC, Mumbai, for their continued support in enabling life-saving transplants.
