Several flood alerts in place as West Wales braced for flooding

Several rivers are on flood alert as West Wales braces for potential flooding on Saturday, November 29 with a danger to life weather warning in place.

The affected areas include the lower Towy catchment downstream of Llandeilo, the River Severn from Llyn Clywedog to Newtown, and rivers in south Pembrokeshire, Taf, Cynin, and the upper Towy catchment.

The flood alerts were issued in response to expected rainfall and rising river levels.

The lower Towy catchment area, excluding Llandeilo, was placed on flood alert at 6.55am on November 29.

Here, the flooding of low-lying land and roads is anticipated due to the rainfall already affecting the area.

The river levels are currently above normal and will be continuously monitored.

The area around the River Severn, stretching from Llyn Clywedog to Newtown, was also given a flood alert on November 28 at 8.41pm.

This was due to the expected flooding of low-lying land and roads as a result of the rainfall impacting the area.

Roads close to Caersws could also be affected with rising river levels.

The situation will be closely monitored.

South Pembrokeshire's rivers were issued a flood alert on November 4 at 3.59pm which was updated on November 28 at 7.24pm.

The alert stated that the flooding of low-lying land and roads is ongoing due to the rainfall impacting the area.

River levels are above normal and will continue to be monitored.

The River Ritec in the Salterns area of Tenby is expected to remain at high levels for a significant number of days due to restrictions at the tidal outfall.

In the Taf and Cynin catchments, a flood alert was issued, warning of expected flooding of low-lying land and roads due to rainfall.

The rainfall is expected to affect this area from 8pm on November 28, causing river levels to rise above normal.

A flood alert was issued for the upper Towy catchment upstream of Llandeilo, excluding the Bran at Llandovery.

The alert, issued on November 28 at 7.17pm, warned of expected flooding of low-lying land and roads due to rainfall.

River levels are expected to rise above normal and the situation will be continuously monitored.

The flood alerts coincide with a yellow weather warning for rain, which is now in force all day until midnight.

The Met Office has stated that there is potential for 20-30mm of rain to fall fairly widely, with 50mm possible in places.

Over high ground, there is a chance of 60-80mm of rain falling.
