Helicopter pilot had taken cocaine before Australia crash that killed Neston couple

Diane, 57, and Ron Hughes, 65, from Neston, died in the collision at about 2pm local time - 4am GMT - on January 2 on Main Beach, not far from the Sea World theme park in the state of Queensland.

The incident occurred when one helicopter was taking off, and the other was landing.

The couple, who had been married for just 18 months, were visiting Ron's daughter, Jane, and her family in Australia when the tragedy occurred.

One of the helicopters was able to safely land on the sandbank, with five of its six passengers suffering injuries.

But the other helicopter crashed, killing four of those inside, including Mr and Mrs Hughes, chief pilot Ashley Jenkinson, and New South Wales tourist Vanessa Tadros, who was on board with her son.

Three more people were left critically injured.

Today (Tuesday, December 2), the inquest into the disaster continued, heard by Queensland Coroner Carol Lee, in Brisbane.

Jenkinson's fiancée, Kosha Richardson-Johnson, told the inquest that the pilot had a breakdown just before Christmas due to work-related stress and had used cocaine at social events around six to eight times a year.

Australian Associated Press reported that Miss Richardson-Johnson said Jenkinson had taken a small bag of cocaine to a 2022 New Year's Eve party. She said she saw him use the drug at 3am on January 1, a day before the disaster.

Jenkinson tested positive for cocaine during an autopsy, the coroner heard.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation found that he had a "very low" concentration of cocaine was detected, and it was "unlikely to have been directly affected by the drug at the time of the accident".
