NASA Glenn's latest project not sent to space after launch is scrubbed

CLEVELAND (WJW) -- NASA Glenn Research Center was supposed to send its latest project into space on Saturday, but unfortunately, that didn't happen.

Their Next Generation fuel cell system was set to be on Blue Origin's launch Saturday morning, but the launch was scrubbed after Blue Origin said there was an issue with the rocket's boosters.

NASA Glenn's system is part of research conducted right here in Cleveland that could be essential in NASA's mission to return to the moon.

Fuel cells are similar to batteries. They convert stored chemical energy into usable electrical energy.

NASA Glenn says the system uses hydrogen and oxygen, reacts them together to form water, and a byproduct of that reaction is electricity.

In the future, that could power a base on the moon or even a space rover on Mars.

A new launch date hasn't yet been set.

NASA Glenn says after a successful launch, they plan to simulate new environments to test the system, like conditions on the moon's surface.
