TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra, Indonesia, erupted again on Sunday night, August 31, 2025, at around 19:33 local time. The 2,891 meters above sea level volcano spewed volcanic ash with a column height of 800 meters from the crater peak.
Marapi Volcano Observation Post (PGA) officer, Ahmad Rifandi, stated that the eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.2 millimeters and a duration of 56 seconds. 'The ash column was observed as white to gray with thick intensity leaning towards the northeast,' Ahmad reported to the Geological Agency on Sunday night.
Mount Marapi had previously erupted twice on Friday, August 29, 2025. The first eruption occurred at 03:12 local time and was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 44.5 millimeters and a duration of 21 seconds. 'No visual eruption was observed,' he said.
The second eruption occurred at 09:35 local time, ejecting ash up to 300 meters from the summit. Seismograph recordings showed that the eruption produced vibrations with a maximum amplitude of 2.5 millimeters and a duration of approximately 23 seconds.
The mountain, located on the border between Agam Regency and Tanah Datar, is currently on Alert or Level II status. The Geological Agency recommends that the surrounding communities avoid activities within a three-kilometer radius from the Marapi Volcano's activity center, the Verbeek Crater.
Residents living around the river tributaries originating from Mount Marapi are also urged to be cautious of the potential hazard of mud floods that may occur during heavy rainfall. In the event of ashfall, the public is advised to use nose and mouth masks for protection.
Mount Marapi is a stratovolcano-shaped like a cone due to layers of volcanic material built up by pyroclastic deposits and continuous repeated lava flows caused by eruptions. Since January 2025, the mountain has erupted 90 times.
