Buncrana Memorial 5K Walk to be held in memory of David Magee - Donegal Daily

A 5K charity memorial walk is to be held in Buncrana, in memory of the late David Magee.

David sadly passed away in January of this year following a cardiac arrest.

On the 15th of November, what would have been David's 50th birthday, Buncrana will come together to raise money in his memory for Buncrana's Community First Responders, doing one of his favourite things - a 5 kilometre walk.

The walk will start at the Buncrana Shore Front at 12:30pm, go to Fr Hegarty's Rock, and back again.

David was the manager of Fort Dunree for almost two decades, but also developed a passion for doing local Park Runs.

On one such run in Dungloe in November of 2019, David collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest.

Another participant in the run, Hugh Mc Laughlin, was running behind David when he collapsed, and immediately jumped into action, using First Aid and CPR training he had received just months earlier to help save David's life.

Hugh's efforts meant that David survived until paramedics arrived on scene, and he was airlifted to University Hospital Galway where he would receive further treatment.

The two men became friends after Hugh's life-saving actions, and over the next year David worked to get back to full fitness, aiming to firstly walk the distance of a Park Run before getting back up to full speed.

They would take on Park Runs a few times each year, even completing the Wild Atlantic Adventure Race together on a number of occasions.

The two men had planned to complete a Park Run on the five year anniversary of David's 2019 cardiac arrest, on the 23rd of November 2024.

It was officially cancelled due to Storm Bert, but the two went on to complete the run anyway that afternoon.

Sadly just two months after that momentous run, David would suffer another cardiac arrest and unfortunately pass away.

Ahead of the upcoming fundraiser, David's wife Monica and his family say that they will be eternally grateful to Hugh, to the paramedics and to the crew of the Coast Guard involved in 2019.

They also wish to thank all of the Emergency Services and First Responders who answered the call in January also.

Buncrana Community First Responders were chosen as the recipients of the upcoming memorial walk, as David's family wished to highlight the important role Community First Responders have.

They train and work on a voluntary basis and answer the call when needed until Emergency Services arrive.
