Oscar Piastri's win in Spain overshadowed by Max Verstappen controversy

Oscar Piastri's win in Spain overshadowed by Max Verstappen controversy

McLaren secured the perfect result in Barcelona, Oscar Piastri converting pole position to lead team mate Lando Norris home and extend his lead in the drivers' championship.

But behind them, the race ended in huge controversy and confusion with Red Bull's Max Verstappen handed a 10-second penalty for barging into Mercedes' George Russell, dropping the Dutch driver to 10th place.

The four-time world champion could yet face further punishment with the stewards investigating a separate incident between the Dutch driver and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Verstappen accused his rival of "slamming" into him but the stewards may well see it differently.

Both incidents came after a late safety car period, brought about when Kimi Antonelli retired with a power unit issue.

Leclerc ended up finishing third, with Russell fourth and Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg a surprise fifth, ahead of the second Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton.

More to follow

Lap 56: Antonelli retires

Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes goes up in a cloud of smoke as the power unit gives up on him, sending the Italian into the gravel trap on the outside of Turn 10. The stricken Mercedes brings out the safety car, leading to all drivers in the top 10 to pit for soft tyres - except Max Verstappen. With the Red Bull driver only having a new set of hard tyres available, he is a sitting duck despite his protestations.

Lap 61: Verstappen passed on restart

Verstappen tries to stay close to the second-placed McLaren of Lando Norris but loses the rear end coming on the pit straight as the race goes green again. That allows the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc to get a run on Verstappen and pass him, with the pair touching as they try to close the gap on each other. George Russell, running in fifth, also gets a strong slipstream and tries to pass Verstappen, hitting the Red Bull at Turn 1 and forcing the Dutch driver over the run-off area.

Lap 64: 'Mad Max' drives into Russell

Verstappen keeps hold of fourth but is told by his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiassi, to let Russell through. He rages on the radio in response, then slows into Turn 5 as he appears to let Russell through. However, Verstappen has other thoughts and intentionally runs deep to hit Russell in similar fashion to their Turn 1 incident, before driving off to keep fourth place.

Lap 64: Verstappen finally lets rival through

As Russell rages on the radio, asking "What the f -- ?!" over Verstappen's actions, the four-time world champion finally lets Russell through at Turn 12, elevating the Mercedes into fourth place.

Lap 66: Penalty demotes Verstappen

On the final lap Russell reports over the radio that he has damage, but there's worse news for Verstappen as he gets a 10-second penalty that drops him from fifth to 10th behind Nico Hulkenberg, Lewis Hamilton, Isack Hadjar, Pierre Gasly and Fernando Alonso. Verstappen, clearly still furious with events, drives quickly back to the pits and immediately leaves the holding pen with his helmet still on after being weighed.

As Nico Rosberg said on Sky Sports, the 10-second penalty for Verstappen feels very lenient. That was just ridiculous and the stewards should be clamping down on moments like that. We wait to hear what Verstappen and Russell have to say.

It is a real highlight to see the three men on the podium in the debrief room watching the race highlights back. The best moment comes as they watch back Verstappen ramming into Russell. Norris says "I have done that before, on MarioKart! Absolute gold from Lando! Their reactions to watching the incident was gold dust.

On his fifth win of the season:

On the restart:

The stewards are still taking a look at contact made between Leclerc and Verstappen down the main straight at the restart.

The Dutchman has been given a 10-second penalty and drops down from fifth to tenth. Nico Rosberg has had his say on the incident on Sky Sports:

The Australian took pole yesterday and extends his lead at the top of the championship with a clinical drive today! That is his fifth win of the season. Norris comes home in second to make it a McLaren one-two. Leclerc is third with Russell in fourth. Verstappen is fifth but surely a penalty is heading his way. That was bonkers after the safety car restart. Absolutely crazy! And breathe!

We start the final lap. What a bonkers end this has been!

Verstappen allows Russell back through at turn 12. Behind Hulkenberg gets past Hamilton for sixth.

Piastri has more than a second on Norris, who is over three seconds clear of Leclerc. Verstappen is told to let Russell through. It looks like Verstappen is going to allow Russell past but he then just rams into Russell at turn five. What is he doing? The Dutchman semi let Russell through but then just rammed into the side of Russell. You cannot do that!

Piastri accelerates on the exit of turn 12 and we are back racing. Verstappen has an awful exit of the final corner, nearly losing the car completely, and Leclerc gets past him even before turn one. There is contact between Leclerc and Verstappen as the Ferrari an went by the Dutchman. Russell attempts the move into the first corner and Verstappen runs wide. Verstappen just holds onto fourth but will he have to give that place up? Verstappen and Russell bumped wheels and the former then went wide. Verstappen actually did incredibly well to keep hold of the car on the exit of the final turn.

The safety car is finally ending this lap and Hamilton is not happy with the number of laps "wasted". Will Verstappen be at risk on the hards on this restart?

The backmarkers need to make their way through so we will continue with the safety car for now. We will have just over five racing laps remaining when the safety car comes in.

Everyone in the top ten is on the soft tyre except for Verstappen, who is on the hard tyre. Could he now be at risk from the likes of Leclerc, Russell and Hamilton behind, who are on soft tyres? Here is your current top ten:

With the safety car out, do McLaren double stack. Piastri and Norris are close together but they decide to pit both. Piastri's stop was a little slow but McLaren get the job done. Red Bull have put Verstappen onto the hard tyre. The Dutchman questioned why they have done this and is told that was the only option.

Yellow flags! Antonelli is into the gravel at turn 10 and has stopped. It is a power failure for the Mercedes man rather than an error. A safety car has been called.

After what was nearly chaos as the leaders made their way through the gaggle of cars, things have settled down. Piastri is just over three seconds ahead of his teammate Norris, who in turn has just over two seconds back to Verstappen.

What are they doing? With Norris just behind, Lawson and Bearman have a huge tussle into turn one, which nearly causes huge problems for Norris but certainly costs him time. They have to be more aware of the leaders behind them. Verstappen calls them "something idiots", I do not think I need to say what the something word is. Verstappen actually gained from that whole situation as Norris lost probably half a second.

Piastri is having to make his way through a gaggle of backmarkers. Verstappen is complaining over the team radio about the ride of his car and he has dropped out of DRS range behind Norris.

Two clean stops in consecutive laps for McLaren and Piastri is back out in first, also on the soft tyre. Verstappen does have DRS behind Norris down the main straight.

With the undercut powerful on the soft tyre, McLaren know they need a quick stop and they deliver as Norris comes out ahead of Verstappen, but only by a second.

Piastri is now told to come in.

The Red Bull crew are back out and Verstappen does come in this time to put the soft tyre on. As he comes back out his teammate Tsunoda gets past Ocon and makes it a little tricky for Verstappen at the pit exit. Not great strategy from the Red Bull team there. Norris is then told to box.

The Red Bull pit crew come out into the pits but Verstappen does not come in. Mind games!

One man who does pit is Hamilton, who has a slow stop as the front right was slow on. He goes onto a set of softs and emerges in seventh.

It has not been the best of days for the Spaniards at their home race but the home fans see some wheel-to-wheel action between the two of them. Alonso goes up the inside of Sainz at turn seven.

Norris was gaining time quickly on Piastri but has stabilised that gap in and around three seconds. Verstappen is a further four seconds back from Norris.

Russell makes his second stop of the race and it is a new set of softs fitted onto his Mercedes. Interesting call. Mercedes must think with less fuel on board that they can take those softs to the end.

Ferrari are bringing Leclerc in and he goes onto another new set of mediums. He emerges in sixth.

Top five with gaps:

Is Verstappen going to try and make a two-stop strategy work? It feels very unlikely that he could achieve that as he would have to make these medium tyres last well over 30 laps. He is just under five seconds behind Norris.

Norris has taken a second out of Piastri in the last couple of laps and is within three seconds now.

Verstappen closes up to the back of Leclerc and with the aid of DRS easily gets the move done before the entry into turn one. Verstappen is into third, just under six seconds behind Norris, who is around four seconds off leader Piastri.

It has not been a home Grand Prix to remember for Sainz and his weekend gets a bit worse as rookie Bortoleto executes a great move around the outside of Sainz into turn one.

There is contact between Bearman and Lawson into turn one as the latter attempted an audacious move up the inside. That could have resulted in a lot more damage for both cars. That move was probably not there for Lawson.

Lawson tries another move on the next lap but cannot successfully do so.

The two McLarens were closing in on Verstappen and Red Bull decide it is time to pit the four-time world champion. He drops back down to fourth but only just comes out ahead of Hamilton. Verstappen is now onto the medium tyres and has already pitted twice before the halfway stage of this race.

Norris is told over his team radio that Verstappen is on a three-stop strategy and McLaren are happy with their plan.

Albon is back in a lap later and Williams have played the game as he now retires his car.

Hadjar and Gasly are in a great tussle through the first sector and the former gets the move done around the outside of turn four to take eighth place.

Albon has already damaged his front wing just a few laps ago after colliding with Lawson at turn one and he is told by his Williams team to retire the car. He comes into the pits but he has not retired yet as he serves a ten second stop-go penalty.

Top five with gaps:

Verstappen is the only one of the top five on the softs and pitted a long time before everyone else.

Piastri does come in and he comes out behind Verstappen but there is a significant tyre difference in terms of tyre age. Verstappen is the only one of the top six to not go onto the medium tyre.

McLaren have brought Norris in first and he changes onto the medium tyre. Verstappen does go through into second but he came in nearly 10 laps ago.

Antonelli is brought in by Mercedes ane emerges behind the Alpine of Gasly down in eighth.

McLaren are preparing to bring Piastri in.

Piastri says to his team that getting to lap 25 is possible but difficult. His advantage out in front is five and a half seconds. Both McLarens are yet to pit.

Mercedes bring Russell in and he switches to the medium tyre. He emerges behind the Ferrari duo.

Hamilton is still questioning why he was brought in so early and is told they wanted to prevent the risk of an undercut. Meanwhile further ahead Verstappen gets the move done on the other Mercedes and gets past Russell for third at turn seven.

With much fresher tyres, Verstappen goes around the outside of Antonelli at turn 12. He is into fourth as Leclerc has come into the pits, coming back out in seventh. Both Ferraris on the medium tyre now.

Hamilton is told to pit and he changes from a soft to a medium. He comes back out in ninth, just ahead of Bortoleto. Leclerc is told to fully push but he responds by saying he already was.

Verstappen makes an easy move up the inside of turn 10 on the RB of Hadjar to move into seventh. I suspect Red Bull got on the phone to their sister team to make sure Hadjar did not make that difficult for Verstappen.

Verstappen has had enough of those tyres and decides to pit. He comes back out in eighth on another set of softs. Further down Alonso goes into the gravel on the exit of turn five.

Norris is just four tenths behind Verstappen coming out of the last corner and the move in the end is easy for Norris before the entry into turn one. Norris is just over four seconds behind his teammate.

Verstappen has complained of no grip compared to the McLarens. Down the pit straight Verstappen moves to the inside and Norris thinks of a move around the outside but thinks better of it. Piastri's lead out in front is now above four seconds. Piastri says he is struggling a little with the rear.

Norris has closed up to Verstappen, who is nearly four seconds behind Piastri. Norris has DRS but cannot get the move done for now.

Gasly is the latest driver to pit. These are earlier stops than we anticipated. Could we see some make three stops today?

Hamilton is finally told to let Leclerc through and the latter makes the move up the inside of turn one.

More stops further down the grid as Hulkenberg and Sainz pit.

Leclerc eyes up a move up the inside of Hamilton into turn one but the latter holds onto fourth. Ferrari may be thinking of swapping their drivers as they are losing time but knowing Ferrari they will make a meal of it.

Behind Bearman and Tsunoda have both come in for the first time.

Norris is told to push on these tyres as they are up to temperature and he will be pushing to pass Verstappen. The gap between Verstappen and Norris is just over a second.

Hamilton has dropped more than three seconds behind Norris but is for now staying ahead of Leclerc. It surely will not be long until Leclerc asks the team to let him through.

Verstappen has dropped back from Piastri, with the gap now above three seconds.

There have already been a few instances this season of Ferrari not knowing what to do and whether to swap their drivers. Hamilton has dropped back from Norris and is now under pressure from Leclerc, who has DRS but Hamilton staunchly defends his position.

Meanwhile further back Albon has had to come in to change a damaged front wing.

Verstappen has stayed within DRS range of Piastri but Norris is too far back to get DRS on Verstappen. Hamilton and Leclerc are fourth and fifth respectively for Ferrari. The two Mercedes then of Russell and Antonelli follow in sixth and seventh.

Russell complains over team radio about people moving under braking but his boss Toto Wolff tells Russell to concentrate.

Piastri gets a great start and no-one has a shot at making a move on him. It is three abreast, similar to last year, with Norris, Verstappen and Russell going together down to turn one. Verstappen makes the move on Norris around the outside, like Russell did a year ago. Russell loses places to both Ferraris through the first sector.

We are under way at the Spanish Grand Prix.

The drivers make their way round for the formation lap. 18 of the 19 starters are on the soft, except for Tsunoda starting from the pit lane on the medium tyre. The McLarens start on new sets whilst Verstappen and Russell are on used sers.

In terms of what tyres the frontrunners have available, Piastri, Norris, Verstappen and Russell have one new set of each of the three tyre compounds. Leclerc has two new mediums but no new softs. Hamilton has one new hard and one new medium but no new softs.

Tsunoda starts from the pits.

McLaren have both cars on the front row but it is a long run down to turn one. A year ago Norris started from pole but came out of the first few corners in third as Russell went from third to first by swinging around the outside. With the pace of the McLaren, if their two drivers stay one and two out of the few first few turns you would imagine they will have too much pace for everyone else.

When is Neil Diamond's hit not belted out at a sporting event? The fans at the Spanish Grand Prix are treated to a rendition just 10 minutes out from the formation lap.

A special moment for the two home favourites, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, as the Spanish national anthem is played. Alonso starts tenth but, after a dismal day yesterday, Sainz is down in 17th.

The England captain has admitted that he is baking! His backing goes in particular to Lando Norris, but he makes sure he does not leave out his fellow compatriots George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. Sky Sports' Nico Rosberg was happy to speak to Kane as he is a Bayern Munich fan.

Sky Sports got a word out of Kane but Bukayo Saka was not so keen to speak to the media. That was the shortest interview you are going to see and a little bit awkward.

Dan Burn was a bit more chatty and he is hoping for a Norris win and a McLaren one-two.

Many are expecting it to be a two-stopper today but will some attempt just one stop? It is unlikely but could some try a very aggressive three-stop race, allowing the driver to push very hard on every stint and not have to look after the tyres. Speaking to Sky Sports earlier, George Russell said there is not that much between the three tyres so the soft may be a favourite tyre, especially off the line. It is hot once more in Catalunya today and the high track temperatures will have a big say on the strategy.

Oscar Piastri starts on pole for today's Spanish Grand Prix after a sublime lap in qualifying yesterday to claim his fourth pole position of the season. The current Championship leader pulled out a 1:11.546, just over two tenths quicker than his McLaren teammate Lando Norris, with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen in third. The pole margin was the biggest of the season to date. Piastri goes into this weekend with a three-point advantage over Norris, with Verstappen a further 22 points back. Speaking after qualifying, Piastri was delighted with his qualifying performance.

"I am very happy," Piastri said. "It has been a good weekend so far. It did not start off in the best way, we were struggling a little bit, but last night [Friday] we found some pace and today [yesterday] the car is mega and feel I have been able to put in some good laps as well. This was a pretty miserable scene 12 months ago so to turn it around in the best way is a great result."

Norris was on provisional pole after his first run in qualifying but was pipped to pole position by his teammate. He admitted after qualifying that he probably made a few small errors but was content with his efforts.

"Oscar drove very well. The pace is definitely there, just a couple of little mistakes. A good result for the team, a nice one-two and an interesting start for tomorrow [today]. It is a long run down to Turn 1, which is normally interesting and we have a lot of quick guys behind us, so we will not count them out. A good result today [yesterday], I am happy."

Mercedes' George Russell will start fourth, with the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton fifth. Kimi Antonelli starts sixth and Charles Leclerc begins from seventh. One man who will not be racing today is the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll, due to pain in his hand and wrist that will need surgery. He suffered a wrist injury as a result of a bike accident in 2023 and his team have confirmed his absence for today.

"Over the course of the past six weeks Lance has been experiencing pain in his hand and wrist, which his medical consultant believes is in relation to the procedure he underwent in 2023," Aston Martin said. "As a result his medical team have confirmed that he will not race tomorrow and he will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery."

Last year Norris started on pole but dropped to third after turn one as Russell swept around the outside to go from P3 to P1. Verstappen, who has four wins around this circuit including his maiden win in F1, started second but won the race, his fourth time around this circuit, and polesitter Norris came home to finish second. Who will be victorious in Spain today? The race begins at 2pm BST.
