Wild Pursuit Ends in Standoff with Deputies in NoHo; Driver Arrested - MyNewsLA.com

A motorist initially wanted for reckless driving was arrested Monday after leading authorities on a dangerous pursuit that came to a stop when the driver struck a median, causing the vehicle's airbags to deploy and prompting an extended standoff in North Hollywood.

Deputies from the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station received a call for service around 2:50 p.m. on Monday regarding an intoxicated individual who had struck approximately four vehicles in the La Canada Flintridge area without stopping, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The driver was located on Foothill Boulevard, where he failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued.

The motorist was seen weaving through traffic on Sunland-area streets, side-swiping multiple vehicles as the driver attempted to elude authorities.

"During the approximate 20-minute pursuit, the driver struck multiple vehicles, committed an assault against our deputies, and nearly struck two children and pedestrians," sheriff's officials said in a statement.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., as the driver neared the area of Vineland Avenue and Hortense Street, the motorist struck a median, causing the interior airbags to deploy and disabling the car.

Sheriff's deputies amassed behind the car, but the driver refused to exit the car, prompting a standoff.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., the suspect began to repeatedly open and close the door of the sedan, appearing to yell at the deputies behind the car. Several times, he exited the vehicle but quickly got back inside and closed the door.

The final time he exited the car, deputies ran at him and tackled him to the ground, taking him into custody.

According to the sheriff's department, the driver was initially wanted for reckless driving. The suspect is also expected to be booked on suspicion of assaulting a peace officer during the chase.

"Our hearts go out to those who were impacted by this scary event," sheriff's Capt. Ryan Vienna said. "Each pursuit requires constant and ongoing evaluation, discipline and management."

Investigators were seeking the public's help in identifying the two children who were almost struck by a driver in a crosswalk near Ramsdell Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. They also encouraged individuals who may have had their vehicles struck by the suspect to call 818-248-3464.
