Residents vote 'No' on Watkins Glen Central School District Capital Project

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WETM) -- Residents in the Watkins Glen Central School District went out to vote on Tuesday in an overwhelming majority against a planned capital project with the price tag in the tens of millions.

Polls were open throughout the day in Watkins Glen on Tuesday as residents voted to either approve or deny a $35 million capital project for the school district.

Polls closed at 8 p.m. and saw an overwhelming majority against the project with 430 votes no and 174 votes yes, according to officials with the Watkins Glen Central School District.

The $35,832,000 project would have gone toward new construction and alterations, renovations, and other improvements to the district's buildings and facilities. This includes the elementary school, high school, district storage building, and bus garage.

On top of construction, the district would have used the funds to buy machinery and other equipment to improve the district.

More than $5 million of the $35,832,000 project would have come from the district's "Capital Reserve Fund" while the remaining $30,823,131 would have been raised through property taxes and other state aid.
