Wisconsin football defensive back named Big Ten defensive player of the week

The biggest storyline of Wisconsin football's 2025 season opener against Miami (OH) was the play of the Badgers' defensive unit. The star of that defense, who shut out the RedHawks, was senior defensive back Preston Zachman.

The defensive leader had two interceptions on Thursday night. He also allowed zero catches on three targets and received a 92.3 coverage grade from ProFootballFocus.

With the controversial offseason departure of standout cornerback Xavier Lucas and starter Nyzier Fourqurean's ongoing eligibility issue, the secondary room was arguably the biggest question mark heading into fall camp. Zachman was expected to step up as the leader of that room, along with veterans Ricardo Hallman and Austin Brown. He delivered just that during the season opener.

Zachman's two picks are tied for the most in college football through one week. With pass-heavy offenses of Oregon, Washington, and others on the schedule, expect the veteran safety to be a crucial factor in this team's success going forward.
