The Electoral Commission has appointed 3 September to 24 September 2025 as the period for the nomination of candidates for Local Government Councils Elections 2026.
According to Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the Chairperson, Electoral Commission, the nomination exercise will be conducted according to the levels of the Local Government Councils, and shall take place during weekdays, beginning at 9.00 a.m. and ending at 5:00pm on each of the appointed dates.
According to EC, nomination of candidates for District/City Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, and Councilors, including Special Interest Groups (SIGs) shall take place from 3rd - 5th September 2025 at the gazetted District/City Nomination Centers, while nomination of candidates for Municipality/City Division Chairpersons and Councilors, including Special Interest Groups (SIGs) shall take place from 8th - 10th September 2025 at the gazetted District/City Nomination Center.
EC notes that nomination of candidates for Municipal Division Chairpersons and Councilors including Special Interest Groups (SIGs) will run from 11th - 24th September 2025 at the gazetted District/City Nomination Centers and nomination of candidates for Sub County and Town Chairpersons and Councilors including Special Interest Groups (SIGs) shall take place from 11th - 24th September 2025 at the gazetted County Nomination Centers.
"All persons aspiring to contest in the Local Government Councils Elections are urged to familiarize themselves with the requirements for nomination for each elective position, as outlined in the Guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission," Byabakama says, adding: "Aspirants can collect copies of the nomination forms and the above guidelines from the District Electoral Commission offices in each district across the country, or obtain soft copies of the forms and guidelines from the Electoral Commission website: www.ec.or.ug."
