Knutsford Beavers boosted by DIY day out at care home

CARE UK's Cranford Grange care home partnered with the Knutsford Beavers for a day of intergenerational learning.

The group worked together on hands-on activities including woodworking and building bug hotels as part of the 'Fixer Uppers' programme, which encourages residents to share lifelong repair skills with the younger generation.

Dan Cole, general manager at Cranford Grange, said: "Residents have honed their DIY skills over a lifetime, and the Fixer Uppers project has been a fantastic way for them to connect with young people and share practical knowledge in a meaningful way.

"It was wonderful to see everyone fully engaged and residents swapping stories, learning from one another, and genuinely enjoying the process.

"We would like to thank Knutsford Beavers for coming to the home to take part in a series of interactive DIY activities.

"It was a brilliant evening, and we look forward to many more visits in the future."

The project supported the Beavers in earning their Builder Activity Badge, Community Impact Staged Activity Badge, and My World Challenge Award.

Among the residents taking part was 97-year-old Bazil Mortley, a former Scout leader and Knutsford Scouts assistant district commissioner.

Mr Mortley said: "I was delighted to participate, holding fort amidst the Knutsford Beavers.

"It brought back fond memories from my time as a leader.

"It was lovely to share my skills with the Beavers who were eager to learn and participate in the activity.

"The results were outstanding and demonstrated the value of building things by hand."

The Fixer Uppers scheme launched in the lead-up to International Repair Day and aims to revive traditional repair skills such as mending furniture and clothes.

The initiative also promotes sustainability by encouraging the transfer of practical knowledge between generations.

At Cranford Grange, the activity was supported by the care home's sustainability champion.

The home, located on Hall Lane, provides residential, dementia, nursing, and respite care, and offers a wide range of leisure activities and community-focused events.
