The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has planned to construct another multi-level two-wheeler parking facility near the T. Nagar MLA's office. A feasibility study is to be conducted at a cost of ₹23.6 lakh for this, even as the existing facility remains largely empty and underused.
The consultants to be roped in would prepare a Detailed Feasibility Report in two months for the proposed multi-level parking-cum-commercial complex on the Corporation's land parcel in the MLA office campus.
T. Nagar MLA J. Karunanidhi said the new parking amenity would be within the MLA office campus for public use.
He mentioned that the existing structure in Pondy Bazaar was not working optimally. He said the proposed facility was meant for two-wheelers, so congestion caused by on-street parking on stretches such as Ranganathan Street and smaller lanes in T. Nagar could be reduced.
On the status of why the current facility is not functioning well, he said he would check with the Corporation.
According to GCC, the feasibility study will examine site conditions, parking demand and traffic patterns, and will include topography surveys, soil testing and assessment of projected requirements.
It will also cover planning of the commercial component, financial viability analysis, determining dimensions, capacity, design parameters and development of a project framework under a public-private partnership mode.
An action plan, assessment of existing infrastructure in T.Nagar and scope for expansion will be done, said sources in the civic body.
