WADSWORTH, Ohio (WOIO) - A Medina County veteran and his son were badly hurt after a horrific head-on crash between their motorcycle and a truck while visiting family in the Philippines.
The family is desperate to get U.S. Navy veteran Mark Haury and his 12-year-old son Cole Haury back to the United States for treatment. However, the cost of an air ambulance to travel the distance is anywhere from $270,000 to $300,000.
Jasmin Haury of Wadsworth is Mark's daughter.
"It's been a struggle that we're on the other side of the world and can't be there to hold his hand," said Haury. "I love them more than anything in this world, and I just want to bring him home."
Jasmin's brother has bleeding in the brain, but he is alert, and doctors expect him to fully recover.
But the Wadsworth woman fears her Dad won't make it if he doesn't get the medical help he needs immediately.
"My Dad is in critical condition, he has multiple broken bones, swelling on the brain, bleeding on the brain, and a collapsed lung," Haury said. "The Philippines, it's a third-world country. So the hospital is doing the best that it can, but it's just not what we're used to here in the states, and it's definitely not the care my Dad needs."
The hospital in the Philippines won't accept the Medina County man's insurance and the family has been told they need to pay for the hospital services before her father can be treated.
Jasmin says she's reached out to the Veterans Administration, her Congressman, and the U.S. Embassy, but no one can offer any immediate help.
"Doctors say it's going to be roughly between $5,000 and $7,000 a day," she said. "So spread the word that we could use some help, and if you believe in religion, say a prayer."
Amazingly, Jasmin's prayers were answered during her interview with our 19 News crew.
The family said they would need to raise nearly $300,000 for an air ambulance to bring her father and brother home, and that's just what a family friend and businessman has now offered to do, cover the entire cost to bring the Navy veteran and his son back to the United States and the Cleveland Clinic.
Jasmin's mother, Suzy Haury, walked over to her daughter in tears after taking the phone call that answered the family's prayers.
"Our friend just paid $300,000 to get Dad back home to the Cleveland Clinic," Suzy Haury said.
Through happy tears and hugs, there was genuine shock and surprise that a friend has gifted the Northeast Ohio family a miracle, and will fly Mark and Cole Haury back home as soon as possible.
Jasmin can't believe it, "Someone that kind. I mean $300,000, that's a house. That's ridiculous. I'm shaking."
